5 things you need to know about New Years Resolutions

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

Can you believe it’s already March? The last two months has just been flying by!

How are you doing with your New Years resolutions? Have you forgot about them already? Where you actually motivated the first days in January and then let it slowly slip away? Did life get in the way?

The problem with New Years resolutions are that the focus is on the what and not the how to do it. Instead of having New Year resolutions, have goals and an action plan. If your goals are not specific enough and you don’t have a plan on how to accomplish them, you set yourself up for failure.

Most people who have a new goal fail because of a lack of vision or plan, not because of a lack of willpower. Anyways, willpower is limited! With willpower you can resist short-term temptations but not forever. When we exhausted our willpower in one area of our life there will be less for things like creating new habits.

The most common mistakes that people tend to make when setting new goals are thinking about what the should do and what they should stop doing. Instead, you should be focusing on what you really want to achieve. In order to make a successful change you need to really want it. When you really want something you can actually commit to it and feel motivated about it.

Your goals need to be something that is important to you, not important to your partner, parent or someone else. Don’t set goals that everyone is talking about. Uncover your reasons for your goals. Ask yourself “What is important to me about this goal? What will achieving this goal do for me? What will be different when I have it? How will my life improve? WHY do I want to achieve this goal?” Knowing the reasons you want your goals provides the motivation and drive that keep you moving.

So read on to set yourself up for success with your future goals.

1 - Make positive goals

Instead of saying “I’m going to stop eating sugar.” it is better to say something like “I’m going to eat more greens.” or "I'm going to eat fruits more often instead of ice cream." We all can use some more positivity in our life. Making positive statements make it easier to actually stick to it and feel good about it. You want to add to your life, not taking away from it.

2 - Set small, specific and achievable goals

If you set your goals too big, you risk failing. Ask yourself if the goal is realistic. Aim for something that is challenging but that you can accomplish. Having a goal of eating better or loosing weight is not really specific. What does it mean to eat better? "

3 - Don’t beat yourself up

Everybody has good days and bad days. It is important to track your daily action steps. However, if you couldn’t work on your goal for whatever reason - don’t beat yourself up, just start again the next day. Also, don’t forget to celebrate the little wins! Acknowledging your milestones that bring you closer to your goal help to build your confidence and keep yourself motivated.

4 - Get a coach

People often fail because they want to do something by themselves. Getting a coach will help you get clear about what is holding you back, what the next action steps need to be and to stay on track.

5 - Visualise your goal

Have you ever tried to imagining yourself already achieving your goal? Visualising is a powerful tool to motivate yourself and to help you reach your goals. Close your eyes and ask yourself “What will I feel like when I have achieved my goal?”, “What will I look like when I have achieved my goal?”, “Where am I going to be?", "What am I doing?"
